The Nick Cole Story
2012 Baseball Super Challenge $10,000 Grand Prize Winner!
Nick Cole has been a passionate fantasy baseball fan for more than a decade. "I was a bit of a stat nerd as a kid" Nick recalled, "and I talked my Dad into playing fantasy baseball with me."

Nick can now claim the honor of being one of the best fantasy baseball players on the planet. As the 2012 Baseball Super Challenge winner, Nick proved he is among the best in competitions that include rotisserie and point-style baseball scoring games. His Diamond Challenge Points team finished 14th overall and his Diamond Challenge Roto team finished 26th overall. "At the All-Star break, I was 3rd and 4th, and had a nice lead" Nick exclaimed, "but with a couple weeks to go, my Roto team had fallen to 45th. I really had to make up some ground. My Dad and I talked every day, and I tried to track the teams close to us. During the last couple of weeks, we were mainly focused on trying to win the Super Challenge".

Nick explained each game had a different strategy. "Pitching is king in Roto, but hitting rules in Points," Nick explained. "None of my opening roster pitchers in Points had over a $2 million salary, but in Roto you have to have great pitchers like Verlander, Kershaw, etc." The key players that he had on his teams were Andrew McCutchen, Aroldis Chapman, Rafael Soriano and Kenley Jansen. McCutchen had a great year and wasn't on a lot of teams, and being proactive in adding Chapman, Soriano, and Jansen as soon as they inherited their closing roles was also very important.

Although Nick is a big Cardinals fan, he had very few Cardinals on either team. "You have to keep your fantasy team and the real team you root for separate," he suggested. "I did have Jason Motte, but it was more of a defensive move because so many teams had him."

The 27 year old sports writer has had 19 top 25 finishes, including a 3rd place finish in 2001 before winning the $10,000 Grand Prize in the Super Challenge this year. "It does add some justification to all the years of playing" he exclaimed, and he added that "winning has a way of doing that!"
